RTSB is focused on ensuring that the methods used to support literacy instruction from birth through 3rd Grade are informed by quality research and based on the five best predictors of reading success
Read to Succeed Buffalo (RTSB) believes that through exposure to high quality, intentional, literacy instruction and literacy-rich environments from birth through 3rd Grade, all children, regardless of economic or social challenges, can achieve success.
RTSB’s CARE Child Care and CARE Preschool are early childhood, school readiness programs that provide low-income children access to high quality, licensed home child care and early education at Head Start sites. CARE supports quality improvement and literacy infusion for at least two years, allowing child care providers and Head Start teachers to maximize implementation of best practices. Among other strategies, these programs utilize dialogic reading, an interactive style of reading that promotes children’s language and literacy skills. CARE programs also utilize a locally adapted concepts of print assessment which measures students’ print awareness; the understanding of what books are used for and that print carries meaning. Funds would help RTSB get more high-quality books in the hands of our youngest learners.
AARP Foundation Experience Corps is a volunteer-based tutoring program that connects older adults to their communities by engaging them in the intergenerational work of helping students in grades 1-3 become better readers. The program helps older adult volunteers maintain a sense of purpose by putting their experience to work at the same time addressing a major contributor to poverty: the inability of children to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade. In Experience Corps tutoring, students work with their volunteer tutor on fluency, the ability to read smoothly with accuracy and expression. To understand what they read; students must be able to read fluently. During the 1:1 tutoring session, volunteer tutors also model fluent reading of a fiction text to strengthen vocabulary and comprehension.
Thank you for supporting Read to Succeed Buffalo and our vision that all children will read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade, enabling them to read to learn for a lifetime.
