In January 2024, Maria and her family of four found themselves in a heartbreaking situation. Living in a condominium complex, an electric fire broke out in their home, displacing Maria, her husband, and two children. When the fire was put out, the family was told faulty wiring was the culprit and would cost $2,500 to repair the damage. Unable to pay the cost, Maria reached out to a friend at the Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency who connected Maria to Major Annette Lock at The Salvation Army. Maria was able to work with the staff in the The Salvation Army's Emergency Family Assistance Program to receive financial aid to repair the faulty wiring in her home, as well as receive food and funds to stay in a nearby hotel for several days while the work was being done.
